      Joseph Wilder Beer was born August 17, 1859 near Lawrence Kansas. For a time, he worked as a surveyor and stagecoach driver. The following is from "'Northwest Flats' Heritage - A History of Five Townships in Northwest Texas County Oklahoma". Joe Beer drove a stage coach from Taos, New Mexico to Santa Fe in the early days before he was married. He often encountered half-dressed Indians in his journey, who were always begging for tobacco.

      He married Etta (Stephens) Kline in Fountain, Kansas on November 19, 1889. They moved to eastern Oklahoma shortly after their marriage, and their first five children were born there. About 1899 or 1900 they left eastern Oklahoma and ran in the settlers' race to file on free land near May. They filed on 160 acres of land and lived on the land to prove the claim. The other children, except Ora, were born near May. According to Ora Beer Bonds, they sold their land near May in 1912 and went to California, but they were not happy there, so they returned to Oklahoma and bought a section of land (640 acres) near Guymon. Ora was born near Guymon. They raised cattle and maize on their farm at Guymon. Joseph and Etta had twelve children, but only eight grew to adulthood. A daughter Alta Ora drowned in the Beaver River in 1901 at the age of 11 or 12. A son was stillborn in 1893. A daughter Lilly died of spinal meningitis in 1899 at the age of 2. Another daughter Nellie was born and died in 1910. She was a "blue baby". The dust bowl years were difficult years for the family. Warren had already moved with his family to Michigan by the 1930's, but he returned to Oklahoma and helped to manage the farm when his father became ill. Joseph Wilder Beer died June 13, 1932 and was buried in the Camp Cemetery in Hough, Oklahoma. Etta later had him moved to the Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon, Oklahoma. Son Roy remained in Oklahoma, but the rest of the children left. Jessie George and Della Dean Beer Blauser moved to Idaho. Warren returned to Michigan, and the rest of his sisters also moved there with their families. Etta remained in Oklahoma and died December 30, 1952. Joseph and Etta Beer are buried in the Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon, Oklahoma.

      The following is a song taught to Roy Beer, by Joe Beer, which Roy could sing very well.

      A SONG ABOUT TEXAS COUNTY

      Verse 1
      My name is Joe Beer an old batch I am;
      Keeping old batch on the government plan, and
      You will find me out west on a Texas County claim
      Chorus
      My house is built of natural soil;
      its side is erected according to toil.
      Its roof has no pitch, but is level and plain;
      I always get wet when it happens to rain.
      Hurrah for Texas County, the land of the free;
      the home of the grasshopper, bedbug, and flea.
      Verse 2
      My dishes are lying all over the room;
      my house would get scared at the sight of a broom.
      How happy I feel when I crawl into bed;
      the rattlesnakes rattle a tune at my head.
      The gay little centipede, void from all fear;
      crawls over my neck and down into my ear.
      Verse 3
      Farewell to Texas County, farewell to the west;
      I'm going back east, to the girl I love best.
      I'm gonna stop in Missouri, and get me a wife;
      and live on corn dodger, the rest of my life.

      OBITUARY
      Joseph W. Beer, son of Rev. and Mrs. George Beer was born near Lawrence, Kans., on August 17, 1859, and departed this life at his home Northwest of Guymon, June13, 1932, age 73 years 9 months and 26 days.
      While a small lad, his parents moved near Burlingame, Kans., and there he grew to manhood, and received his early education, later attending Baldwin University near Topeka.
      While a young man he went to New Mexico and became one of the early stage coach drivers from Las Vegas. He remained there 18 months, and then returned to his home in Kansas.
      After his marriage, he moved with his family to Oklahoma, settling near Shawnee. They returned to Kansas after five years.
      On the return of the family to Oklahoma, they settled at May, Okla., in Harper County, where he served the public in official capacity several years.
      Spending a winter in California, he returned to the land he seemed to love best, and chose Texas County in 1912, and has since made this his home.
      Converted when a young man, he united with the Methodist Church and has remained a devoted Christian giving his life in the service of his Master.
      In 1889 he was united in marriage to Miss Etta L. Kline. To this union 11 children were born, eight of whom are now living, three daughters, Alta, Lillie, and Nellie having preceded their father to the beyond.
      He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, three sons; George, Warren and Roy, all of Guymon; five daughters; Fern, Ora and Mrs. Grant Blauser of Guymon, Mrs. Claud Jacobs, Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Jim Harper, Anthony, Kans.; a brother, E. G. Beer, Guymon; two sisters, Mrs. Hannah Casler, May, Okla., and Mrs. Mattie Bryan, Savannah, Ga., and a half sister, Mrs Jessie Gulick, Manhattan, Kans., who is a librarian in the state school. He also leaves 17 grandchildren, other relatives, and a host of friends.
      In the loss of this valued citizen this community loses an asset of a worthy man who always stood for what is right.
      Many friends extend to his loved ones their heartfelt sympathy and "While he will be missed, he will not be forgotten."
