      PHEBE WALLACE WIDOW PENSION DECLARATION

      WAR OF 1812
      DECLARATION OF A WIDOW FOR PENSION

      State of Illinois
      County of Knox
      On this 28th day of March A.D.one thousand eight hundred and seventy eight personally appeared before me Clerk the Circuit Court, of the County of Knox aforesaid, a court of record in and for the State aforesaid Phebe J. Wallace, aged 56 years a resident of Haw Creek Township, county of Knox
      State of Illinois, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Allen Wallace, who served the full period of sixty days in the Military service of the United States in the War of 1812, and who was the identical Allen Wallace who enlisted in Captain Abner P. Penny, afterwards in John McIlvaines company, 19 regiment U.S. Inft at Worthington Ohio on the 18" day of March 1814 and was honorably discharged at Chillicothe Ohio , on the 5" or 6" day of June, 1815; that he enlisted under Capt. Penny, he being captured at Detroit at surrender of Genl Hull. Lt McIlvaine commanded the company, was sent to Franklintown Ohio, from there marched to Louisville, where he joined the Regt. Then marched to Cleveland & then to Erie, Pa. & on to Buffalo NY. On morning of Aug 14, crossed over to Ft. Erie Canada and helped to repel an attack of the enemy on that place. The enemy charged into the second co. Wallace received a strike over the head with a clubbed musket which wounded him severely from which by exposure afterwards he lost the sight of his left
      That she was married under the name Phebe J. Wallace to said Allen Wallace on the 24" day of September A. D. 1841, by Esq. Woodly at Columbia Ohio there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that her said husband died at Haw Creek Twp., Knox Co, Ill. On the 7" day of January 1863 and she has not remarried since his death; that at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States, did she or her said husband adhere to the cause of the enemies of the Government, giving them aid or comfort, or exercised the functions of any office whatever under any authority, in hostility to the United States; and that she will support the Constitution of the United States; that she is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act; that she makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension rolls of the United States, under the provision of the act approved March, 1878 and hereby constitutes and appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation John le Stuart of Galesburg Ill., her true and lawful attorney….to prosecute her claim and obtain the pension certificates that may be issued; that her post office is at Eugene County of Knox State of Illinois; that her domicile or place of abode is Haw Creek Twp, Knox Co Illinois

      AFFIDAVIT of PHEBE WALLACE

      State of Illinois
      Knox County
      Mrs. Phebe J. Wallace, Being first duly sworn on oath states she is an applicant for pension as the widow of Allen Wallace died, late a Private in the John McIlvaine's Co. 19" Regt. U.S. Inf. That she has no private record of her marriage, of having accidentally been destroyed some years ago and she further states that she thinks there is no public record of said marriage, but she can furnish the evidence of friends who knew thru prior to their removal to Illinois and also of friends since their arrival in the state, that they lived together as man & wife from the date of their reputed marriage. That there was no one present with whom she was acquainted at the time of her said marriage, they having gone to Esq. Woodley's house, he being a Justice of the Peace, and were there married. Mrs. Woodley & as I understood it the hired girl were called in as witnesses. I was not acquainted with any of these previous to going there and think I have not seen any of these since. She further says that she is the mother of his children. Eight of these are still living, or were a few weeks since when she last heard from those who are now living in Missouri. The youngest of these being 18 years of age this 2" day of July 1878. That upon their removal to Illinois they went to reside at the North East Quarter of Sec.1, Township 10 North of Range 3 East of the 4" Principal meridian, where she still resides, the above described land having been granted to her husband for his services in the War of 1812

      AFFIDAVIT of MORGAN REESE & THOMAS B. FARQUER
      State of Illinois

      Morgan Reece and Thomas B. Farquer residents of Knox County after first being duly sworn depose and say that they were well acquainted with Allen Wallace dec"d and are also well acquainted with his wife, Phebe J. Wallace. That they became acquainted with them immediately after arrival is said county in the year 1861. Morgan Reece says he helped them build a house upon their farm soon after their arrival and Thomas B. Farquer lived upon their land for about five years and helped fence the place. They further say that the said Allen and Phebe J. Wallace lived together as man and wife from the time they became acquainted with them until his death in January 1863. And had a family of eight children living with them up to the time of their several marriages. And further that it is the general understanding among their neighbors that the land upon which the family resided was granted to said Allen Wallace for service in the U.S. service during the War of 1812. The said Phebe J. Wallace is still living upon said property. They further say they are not interested in her application for a pension
