- Joseph Keys came to Indiana after the death of his second wife, Ruth Marshall. On November 5, 1853 the White River Monthy Meeting received a certificate for Joseph Keys from Deep Creek Monthly Meeting, NC. He died at his son-in-law's house, Durant Smith, husband of Elizabeth.

Joseph Keys JR. was born on 5 Apr 1769 in North Carolina, the son of Joseph Keys and Rebecca Mullan. He died October 6, 1854 in White River MM, Randolph Co., Indiana. Joseph was a birthright Quaker.
Joseph married Mary Piggott on 12 Sep 1793 in Cane Creek MM, Surry Co.,(now Alamance), NC. Mary Piggott was born 9 Apr 1767, in Orange Co., (now Alamance) North Carolina, the daughter of Benjamin Piggott and Mary Hadley. She died 17 Feb 1820 in Deep Creek MM, Surry (now Yadkin) County, North Carolina. Mary was a birthright Quaker.
The following children were born of this marriage: Ruth, b. 10 Oct 1794;
Rebecca, b. 14 Dec 1795; Benjamin, b. 4 Oct 1797; John, b. 18 Oct 1799;
Mary, b. 2 Aug 1801; Joseph, Jr., b. 14 (or 11) Dec 1803; Elizabeth, b. 13 Feb 1806; and Hannah b. 15 Jun 1808.
Following the death of his first wife, Mary, Joseph married Ruth Hadley Marshall in 1821 in Deep Creek MM Surry Co., (now Yadkin) NC. Ruth Hadley Marshele the second wife of Joseph Keys, was the daughter of Simon Hadley and Bridget Foote and was born May 11, 1770. She died May 15, 1852. She was the widow of Joseph Marshall.
Following the death of Ruth, May 18, 1852, Joseph Keys requested membership to the White River MM in Randolph County, Indiana. Membership was granted and he moved from North Carolina to Randolph County, Indiana to live out his remaining years with his children, most of whom had previously migrated to Randolph County.
Mary is buried in the Deep Creek Friends cemetery. Her gravestone is still standing and inscribed; Mary Keys, D 17 2 Mo, 1820. (Some records note her death as February 2, 1820.

Whereas, Joseph Keys, son of Joseph and Rebecca Keys of Surry Co., in the state of North Caroline, and Mary Piggott, daughter of Benjamin and Mary Piggott of Orange County and state aforesaid, having declared their intentions of marriage with each other before several monthly meetings of the people called Quakers at Cane Creek in Orange Co., aforesaid, and according to the good order used amongst them they having consent of parents and relations concerning their s'd proposals of marriage were allowed by s'd meetings. Now these may certify whom it may concern, that for the full accomplishing of their s'd intentions this 12th day of the 9th month 1793 they the s'd Joseph Keys and Mary Piggott appeared in a public meeting of the s'd people at Cane Creek above said and the s'd Joseph Keys taking the s'd Mary Piggott by the hand did in solemn manner openly declare that he took her the s'd Mary Piggott to be his wife promising with divine assistance to be unto her a loving and faithful husband until death should separate them or words to that effect and then and there in the same assembly, she the s'd Mary Piggott did in like manner openly declare that she took him the s'd Joseph Keys to be her husband, promising with divine assistance to be unto him a loving and faithful wife until death should separate them or words to that purpose and moreover the s'd Joseph Keys and Mary Piggott she according to the custom of marriage assuming the name of her husband as a further confirmation thereof did then and there to these presents set their hands and we whose names are underneath subscribed being present at the consummation thereof do, as witnesses hereunto subscribe our names the day and year above written.
