    Notes
    • BIRTH 2 PLACE North Carolina or Tennessee

John Stephens was born about 1810 in North Carolina, the son of David Stephens. His mother's name is unknown. It must be noted that although it is believed that John was born in North Carolina, the 1850 Federal Census of Hawkins County, Tennessee lists his birthplace as Tennessee. (See note below)

David, John's father, is reported to have been born in North Carolina about 1780, the son of immigrant parents. According to tradition, David's mother was Irish and his father English. Although David is believed to have been a Quaker, he may have fought in the War of 1812. John had at least two known siblings, William, born about 1805 in North Carolina and Lewis born about 1807 in North Carolina.
(Source: The Stephens Family Genealogy in the line of William David Stephens by Steve Beason 1973).

According to Steve Beason, in about 1845, John and Hannah moved their family to Tennessee. The 1850 Federal Census, shows them residing in the Township of Tenefree, Hawkins Co., Tennessee. We know that between 1853 and 1856, sometime after John's death in Tennessee, Hannah, with her children, William David, Joseph Hadley, Mary, Martha and Hannah Ruth, moved to Randolph County, Indiana. According to the Beason History, Hannah's oldest son, Alexander was already residing in Randolph County. It is assumed that they moved to that location because of other Keys relatives who lived in the area.

It is noted in the Jericho Friends Meeting and Its Community, a published history of the Jericho Friends Meeting in Randolph County, Indiana, that all of the Keys families that came to the Jericho neighborhood were of the family of Joseph Keys and his wife Mary Piggott. The brother of Mary Piggott, Benjamin was in Jericho as early as 1829. The widow of John Pickett, Benjamin and Mary's brother, was in Jericho as early as 1826. Of the eight children of Joseph and Mary Keys, at least six came to Randolph County. Of these children, four and probably five were Jericho residents. The father of all these children, Joseph Keys also came to Randolph County after the death of his second wife.

Although the Beason history notes that John Stephens died in Tennessee and after that time Hannah came to Randolph County, the book published by the Jericho Friends Meeting states that Hannah "married John Stephens and they came to Randolph County, though probably not near Jericho". At this time I believe that the Beason account is probably the more accurate. Steve Beason knew his great-grandmother, Hannah Keys, and was a teenager at the time of her death. It is assumed that he was given the location of John Stephens' death by Hannah or his grandfather, William David Stephens.
