Alexander was the first child of John Stephens and Hannah Keys and was born in North Carolina on Sept. or Nov. 5, 1832. In about 1845 he moved with his parents to Tennessee. (Per Steve Beason in his publication" The Stephens Genealogy in the line of William David Stephens) He is found in the 1850 tennessee census living in District #16, Tenefree, Hawkins County, Tennessee with his parents and five brothers and sisters. Beason further notes that " After growing to manhood, he left his Tennessee home and went to Indiana". It was there that he married Mariah Cox the daughter of Joshua Cox and Maria McGee on June 4, 1856. (Marriage record noted below)

Steve Beason, in his publication notes that Alexander moved to Indiana prior to his mother. Steve Beason further states that John Stephens died in Tennessee on August 18, 1853. Soon after his death Hannah, with her children, William, Joseph, Mary, Martha and Hannah Ruth, moved to Indiana. Hannah had family on the Keys line residing in Randolph County, Indiana. In the 1860 Federal Census, Alexander, William David, and Hannah Ruth (Ruthy), the youngest child of Hannah Keys and John Stephens, are present in Randolph County Indiana. The other chilren of Hannah and John do not show in the Randolph County census.

Della Beer Blauser, daughter of Etta Stephens Kline Beer, remembers a picture of her grandfather, Alexander Stephens. She states that he was a slender man with dark black hair and a mustache and face whiskers or goatee.

Della's mother further told her that her grandfather, Alexander Stephens was French Canadian.

The death date of Alexander is uncertain.

Kansas did not keep official records until 1885. There is no official death certificate for Alexander. In the 1875 KS census, Mariah is shown as head of household and has a baby B.A. Stephens, 1 month old. It is assumed that Alexander died the last part of 1874 or the first part of 1875.

Information given Della Beer Blauser by her mother Etta Stephens Kline Beer is that Alexander died of pneumonia and did not live long as "he had been out in the weather for some time." This might indicate a Winter death date.

      Misc. Notes:

1/30/93 information sent by Charles Minor shows Alexander died in 1875. Still no confirmation. Information indicates that Mariah was later married to a "Mr. Horace Biggs". She was known by her grandchildren as "Grandma Biggs".

It is reported in the newspaper, The Kansas Sentinel, dated October 26, 1881, that, "Last week a sneak thief entered the residence of Alex. Stephens, who lives seven miles east of this city, and stole $69 in money and a suit of clothes."

We do not know if this is our Alex. Stephens however, we have no confirmation of Alexanders death date and must keep it in mind for further research. If Alexander did die in approximately 1874 or early 1875 of pnuemonia, Etta would have been about 4 years of age and would probably remember his death, however we do not have a date for his death by pneumonia and it could have occured at a later date.
