    Notes
    • Etta was born February 11, 1870 at or near Emporia, Kansas, according the Hallie Elizabeth Beer (This cannot be correct since Etta does not show up on the 1870 census and was only 9 on the 1880 census. This would indicate she was probably born in 1871). A birth certificate has not been located. Etta's father died of pneumonia in late 1874 or early 1875. Her mother also became ill and was unable to care for her younger children. In 1880 Etta and her younger brother Burton (Birtie) and her older brother Sherman were enumerated in the U.S. census at the Protestant Orphan Assylum in Leavenworth, Kansas. They were eventually adopted by a Kline (Cline) family as children to work on the farm. Information obtained by Stephen Beer indicates that this was an informal adoption. These three younger children were known to their family in later years. When Etta was married in 1889, her name on the marriage certificate was given as Etta Kline.
Shown as Ethea in 1880 Federal Census. Listed as resident of the Protestant Orphan Asylum, Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas. Shown as Etta on the 1875 Kansas State Census and known as Etta by the family in later years.
Information received from Stephen Beer, Great-grandson of Etta, indicates that she was also adopted by the Kline family probably the same time as her brother Bert. She was known to her family as Etta Kline.
Per Della Beer Blauser, daughter of Etta, Etta was treated well by the Klines until about 2 to 3 years after the death of "Mom" Kline when Mr. Kline married a women with two grown daughters. From that time Etta had to take care of the grown daughters every need and was not treated well by the new family.
Della also tells the story of how her mother found her birth family after the birth of Etta's first child, Alta, in October 1890, a man stopped by their house with a sick horse. He indicated something about Allen Archer Stephens and Etta's husband, Joe Beer, quizzed him further. They found that Mariah was living with Allen not far away and went to see her.
