- Jacob was born on a farm in Putnam Co, Indiana. He was nearly three years old when his family moved to Pike Co, Illinois. In 1854 his family moved westward across the Mississippi to Davis Co, Iowa, where his father bought a farm in the Fabius Township.
When the Southern states rebelled, the Worley's sided with the North. Jacob and his brothers joined the Union Army on Aug 17, 1861 at Bloomfield, Davis Co, Iowa. Jacob, David, Andrew, James, Felix and John were privates, but Michael was made a 6th Corporal (later he became a Sergeant). Company E 3rd Iowa Cavalry formed up at Keokuk and fought in central and southern MO. Jacob brought his own horse which he sold to the Army. The most famous engagement Jacob fought in was the Battle of Pea Ridge in March 1862. Company E suffered 41 casualties, but none of the Worley's were wounded. After that, Company E was involved in continuous small and bloody conflicts.
Jacob and his brother Michael were wounded by bushwhackers in the Battle of Moors Mill, northeast of Jefferson City, MO on July 28, 1862. Jacob was shot in the left arm and Michael was wounded in the right leg. There were transferred to the Invalid Corps for a time. Jacob's company also fought in the Battle of Hartville, MO in Jan 1863. Missouri seethed with discontent. Union sympathizers were harassed by roving guerillas who made forays into the state, often in large enough numbers to capture supplies and troops. Other battles fought by 3rd Iowa, were at Shiloh, TN, Siege of Vicksburg and Siege of Atlanta, GA.
Early in 1865, Company E entered into its last campaign, the great raid of General Wilson through Alabama and march to Atlanta, GA. Jacob and his brothers were discharged from the Army and came home on Aug 9, 1865.
After the Civil War, Jacob and Sarah Margaret moved to Clay Co, KS where they settled near brothers and cousins, later moving to Colorado Springs, CO. He became a minister in the United Brethren Church of Salem, OR about 1900.
Jacob's trade was a stone mason. He died Feb 2, 1907 Norton, Norton County, Kansas and is buried in Kansas.
Jacob and his wife Sarah Margaret Worley were first cousins
